Selection Panel MICAC

In highly specialised international master’s programmes, recruitment processes often prioritise quantitative indicators such as GPA or the volume of applications received. However, these metrics do not always reflect candidates’ actual readiness for technically demanding and multidisciplinary programmes, particularly in emerging fields such as cybersecurity and cyber-intelligence.

The challenge?

Ensuring that selected candidates not only meet formal eligibility criteria but are genuinely prepared for the academic, technical, and mobility requirements of the programme. Relying primarily on quantitative indicators risked selecting candidates with insufficient technical foundations, overlooking relevant experience, and limiting diversity including gender balance.

Our solution

Implement a qualitative-focused selection approach, complementing standard eligibility criteria with a structured evaluation of candidates’ overall profile. This includes holistic assessment of academic background, technical experience and motivation; structured interviews to validate technical readiness and communication skills; contextual evaluation of trajectories; and consideration of diversity aspects within the framework of merit-based selection.

Outcomes

  • Improved alignment between selected candidates and programme requirement
  • Reduced risk of mismatch
  • Increased diversity in selected cohorts including gender representation
  • More consistent performance levels across students

Key takeaways

Quantitative indicators alone are insufficient for selecting candidates in specialised, interdisciplinary programmes. A structured qualitative assessment improves both academic fit and cohort diversity. Interviews are a critical tool to validate technical readiness beyond transcripts.
